Take Five

Here is a jazz standard that I think we should do. I put a couple different versions on the playlist.

Refuge by Andrew Hill

This is another that I would like to add to our list as we get better. I heard it on Launchcast but couldn't find it anywhere but on Andrew Hill's website. I really like the main melody.

Go to the site and on the left is a menu "Listen Now." It will open another window with a list of songs. Refuge is one of the very first ones.

8 Counts for Rita

I hope you guys like this tune, because when we get good enough I really want to do it. The best version by far is being played on Launchcast by Jimmy Smith (the composer) from his album All the Way Live. Try as I might I could not find that version anywhere. Below is a Jimmy Smith performance, but the one I really liked from Launchcast had the counting in it like the saxophone version. There is also a blues-up version by Tom something-or-other that shows an interpretation of it on guitar. I don't really agree with it, but it would give you an idea of how we might do it. Enjoy.

Pat Metheny 2

Read Pat Metheny first.

This is an hour-long concert of the Pat Metheny Trio. I guess one way to pull off jazz with a power trio is to have a killer guitar player. It is worth watching. Around minute 40 Pat pulls out a weird guitar and does some weird stuff for about six minutes. Other than that I thought it was pretty cool.

This vidy is very cool. It is good to see someone playing an electric bass.

Jazz on.

Pat Metheny

There is some crazy harmonized scatting in this tune. Interesting, I thought. The whole thing was kind of jazz 'n roll or something.

So as you see the title I'm new, to this blogger thing so be patient with me. And how do you put videos and pictures and stuff like that on the blog?

Joe Pass

So this is quite impressive. This is three piece jazz with guitar, bass, and drums. Maybe someday I could play like this.

Welcome to my Underground Lair

Hey everybody. I thought we could use this to keep in touch. We could post song suggestions, schedule rehearsals, and even post songs or sheet music if we can find it. It took me a long time to find pictures of instruments that loosely resembled yours. I hope they are okay. We will all be able to comment and put new posts on here. I was also thinking this will be a unique chronicle of the formation of a band. We could take photos at rehearsals, video of shows, etc. Just a few ideas. We can take it in any direction we feel like. Hope you both like the blog.
